L'épilation à la lumière pulsée se fait par l'émission de lumière et l'absorption de cette lumière par une cible : le poil. La lumière atteint 70°C et détruit (uniquement) le poil, entraînant à terme une quasi non-repousse de celui-ci. Dans le poil, c'est le pigment (la mélanine) qui va capter la lumière et ainsi chauffer. La spécificité technique de la lumière pulsée, par rapport au laser, tient dans le spectre d'émission plus large (plusieurs longueurs d'ondes au lieu d'une seule avec le laser) de la lumière. Avant toute séance, on prend quelques précautions : Raser les poils de la zone concernée 2 à 3 jours environ avant la séance (plus le poil est dru et foncé, plus il est repéré par la lumière).
